I spotted Saul Williams once, in a terrible and totally unlikely velvet-walled cigar bar near the Bradley Center sports arena in Milwaukee. For reasons I can't explain, I walked to his table without hesitation and put my stupid hand on his back and looked down at his face and told him what a big fan I was. I can't imagine it was ever true, although I remember feeling pretty convinced of it at the time. Later in my life I became resolutely
not a Saul Williams fan, but I was hired to write his bio anyway. I think that was about two years ago. I totally forgot it existed, until it resurfaced this morning in a Gmail search for "Lucifer." This is it, not that you gotta read it, but just so I remember it exists in case I ever have to think of something to say to Saul Williams in the future. What's with the weird spacing? No idea.

Saul Williams was the first concert I ever went to. I don't know why I went. I guess I was invited. We arrived and there were some dj's doing dj things, electronic music, I guess, and I thought, huh, I guess this is cool. Luckily it was too loud for my companion to hear me shout "man Saul Williams is a dj?" I had no concept of what an opening act was. Then Saul Williams eventually came on (after maybe a few others openers) and I was basically like, dude, what the fuck is this? Is this even a concert? I was such a dipshit in college.
