look | grant cornett

grant cornett has such a seductive, painterly mastery of grotesque saturation and lurid contrast that he has legitimately changed the way that my colorblind eyes see the world. this is particularly true of the world inside of my refrigerator. i could look all day.

watch | jay carroll

jay carroll has the coolest job i ever heard of, tramping up and down the west coast by car (or actually airstream), trolling every bum dive thrift store along the way with an eye out for american artifacts to keep levi's ancient blood true blue. last i heard they bankroll him anyway -- gq, the ny times and the ace hotel are among his other benefactors -- and it's money well spent. up above's his hypnotic look at the everyday thrum of a pendleton mill. click here for factory photos, coherent backstory and more vignettes of yankee sophisticates reverse robin hooding all the tea party people's best trash.

+ NY Times covers the caravan

listen | family band

In anticipation of the follow-up to the coolest show I ever saw, I am so so psyched to tell you that Family Band have leaked an exclusive demo track into my pocket and on to your sweet ears. Definitely definitely skip CMJ & catch Family Band, back in the bubble this Friday (details), before they hit the road with Warpaint. It is an incomparable strangeness in there and a thing to remember always. But before you fall into all that, here is "The Deal."

I will tell you straight that it's a demo of a track on Family Band's soon-to-be-yours Cold Songs EP. Kim recorded it the night she wrote it, alone in the handmade one-room cabin she shares upstate with Jonny and whoever wants to camp on the lawn. "It's a weird version," she told me, "Super slow. Just me and the sound of the bugs. You can hear something buzzing." To my ears there is wild and reckless under the zoned out calm. Listen.
