there's plenty to say about girls. in fact, all the most interesting parts of our conversation were the ones that didn't make the story. on top of that, sandy kim takes such great photos of them. but right now i got SO much work, that doing them justice is just out of the question. will revisit when there's time to do it right. for now, click the photo, if you feel like it.

“Day after day, sick at the gore, she went back to stab at more animals who bellowed and did not die,” the Vogue reporter, Robert Daley, wrote. “A friend told her she was closing her eyes with each stroke and thus missing the vital spinal gap behind the horns; she hated the idea of killing as much as that. She determined to kill that day’s six oxen with six strokes, keeping her eyes open, or give up bullfighting. She killed them each instantly, painlessly, and returned to Lima, singing.”

rachael was a wiseass with plenty to say and even more to sing around that same fire where we met alela diane last week, and with good reason. she's got a voice on her to bring the birds home in winter. sang "crazy" acapella and a handful of other patsy clines. silenced a whole woods' worth of four-in-the-morning mushroomheads with a falsetto chorus of roy orbison's "crying," too. sweet beyond imagining. but with her psyched-out band of feathered 23-year-olds, all in paisley and rattling goat hooves, she's a wild animal thrashing. growling that big mama thornton growl. they got a record called embrace, just announced and out may 26. their first. here's a listen.

"Designed in 1968, Earth House represents the primal connection between man and nature, allowing its occupants to be inside and outside at the same time. The owner, former Ambassador to Iceland, desired a house that recalled the sod-roof houses around Reykjavik. The pool and house are on axis with Mount Rainier, paying homage to a treasured natural monument. The building is cut into the hillside so that the planted roof plane seamlessly joins the building to the surrounding landscape, making the entire dwelling seem like an excavated sanctuary in the natural environment"

listen | will johnson

the mp3 below is borrowed from captainsdead.com, where you can download the complete set of grumbly songs will johnson sang some night in texas. he's centro-matic's leading man and has a record due out with jason molina soon, which is a highly enviable thing to have, because man, jason molina. that guy really does it. anyway, to be perfectly honest, a lot of this set falls short for me. falls into that old gray trap for two-name singer/songwriters called "indistinguishable," like pro-wrestlers before they get make-up and such. but maybe that's just live or my mood tonight. either way this song here sounds to me like a cross between jeff buckley and richard buckner, which is a recipe i can get behind when it's after midnight on a long weekend ending where the weather winked about spring coming before too long and the dishes from fish tacos i ate with my friends are on the rack drying with the windows open. blah blah blah.

happening | amy von harrington & macho mel shimkovitz

here's an accidental interview i did with macho mel a while back. this is at least loosely what was said:

me: tell me your life.

mm: i worked as a segment producer at vh1. can you believe it? i worked on best week ever. nother life. i was doing animation for a production company and all of a sudden they started taking a lot of commercial work. my tasks went from animating dweezil zappa to erasing dog's genitals from flea & tick commercials.

me: amazing changes.

mm: so i kinda got myself fired and collected unemployment, hung out with bianca all day every day, and we just sort of got wild and did a lot of stuff for a few years. i couldn't go on like that, broadway rush hour, trl lunch break stampede... i just got desperate. and sometimes desperation comes holding hands with luck.

me: and free comedy.

mm: totally. and also, a little spirit crushing. eating at the ski lodge in the mtv building one day, i had a mini breakdown/thru. i started regressing in age, stopped being afraid of having no stability, looked around and saw my friends all hanging out and making art and all of a sudden doing pretty well for themselves. so i just dropped out. that's what it felt like, dropping out of school or something.

me: what else?

mm: pete wentz is a family friend. we played soccer together. why did he name his kid bronx?

me: i don't know.

so, go see the capricious show before it's gone, aka before tomorrow.

i first experienced this as an 8" record with fluorescent mickey mouses and laser beams and constellations printed across its surface in those contrasting reds and blues that sorta pulsate when you look at them and give you a headache after a couple minutes. i was probably 6 at the time and thought it was a totally normal thing to listen to while you hung out or did whatever. like my brother and i would even listen to it before we went to bed sometimes, which is just impossible to understand now. can you imagine how annoying that must have been? it sounds like an alarm clock. how could i not tell?

look | rose and olive

We're two people. We're neighbors. We sometimes pretend we're sisters or cousins, depending on how dark it is.

i was in queens saturday morning for the thrift stores where i found a 12" record of swedish folk songs and jeff bought an old fashioned black&white tv set. outside the third of three shops was an aging paperback our bodies, ourselves, which called out to be bought and gave me a short and unwelcome pang of regret at being a man who (instead of an attempted earthbound legend for the navigation of my indivisible cosmic lusciousness) sees only perversion's last resort. it made me feel obvious, which i am. same's true of the thousand three hundred photos of rose and olive. their bare-toothed sexuality is a password unguessable to the woman-hungry, who can only wonder what it's guarding (if we even make it that far). holy shit this blog is dramatic. how annoying. +

from siddhartha:

when someone is seeking, it happens quite easily that he only sees the thing that he is seeking; that he is unable to find anything, unable to absorb anything, because he is only thinking of the thing he is seeking, because he has a goal, because he is obsessed with his goal. seeking means: to have a goal; but finding means: to be free, to be receptive, to have no goal. you, o' worthy one, are perhaps indeed a seeker, for in striving towards your goal, you do not see many things that are under your nose.

sunday soup | white chili

with the obvious exception of my own mother, who accidentally taught me at least half of what i know-without-thinking, dona mortara's probably my life's greatest source of culinary inspiration and curiosity. my high school girlfriend's mother is the brilliant mind behind a kitchen so stocked with esoteric spices, silver gadgets, specialty appliances and stoned wheat thins, that it has played host to as many nights of slack-jawed, foodless wonderment as it has unforgettable meals. well, actually 'foodless' is a lie. here's the (slightly modified) recipe for her white chili, which has sent me to the stove half a thousand times since first taste.
3 16 oz. cans Great Northern Beans
4 cups chopped chicken-style seitan
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 medium onions, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 4 oz. Cans diced mild chilies
2 teaspoons cumin
1/2 teaspoon oregano, crumbled
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2-3 cups vegetable stock--low sodium
3 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese
Sour Cream

Heat oil in Dutch oven over medium high heat. Add onions and cook until translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir in garlic, then chilies, cumin, oregano and cayenne- cook 2 minutes. Add undrained beans and stock and bring to a full boil. Reduce heat and add chicken and cheese and stir until cheese melts. Season to taste. Ladle in bowls and garnish with sour cream.

Serves 4-6
note: this recipe includes no cilantro. please have the good sense to add some on your own.

UPDATE: I made this last night and, in the absence of vegetable stock, poured half a 40 in there instead. Holy Toledo.

i quit cigarettes not so long ago and miss smoking them pretty awfully at night. mostly depression's just not near as picturesque anymore, at times even unrecognizable, as if you'd shaved the beard off santa claus, dressed him in striped overalls and went on with christmas as usual. lately i been coming home after midnight and lonely or mad at one thing or another. staying up hours after that, too. time of year, etc. anyhow, i found out that putting on to lefty from willie the slightest bit too loud (just enough so you worry if the neighbors' eyes might be rolling) softens the look of a couch in the lamplight under curtains enough that they don't mock so much as they used to and the room almost looks smoky. enough to give a throat the familiar ache and make a person feel to talk on the phone with parents even though they must be sleeping. this is cheesy. didn't mean for it to be. so long. don't smoke any cigarettes tonight.
