hey | the war on drugs

adam granduciel in the world's best t-shirt.

the war on drugs played at the mercury lounge last night, after linfinity and before the school of seven bells. completely satisfied by their short set, i opted out of the opener and closer. here's the text volley that followed my early exit:

me: Any good?
jeff: Dawg! Wish you had stayed!
me: Yeah?? Fuck! Great??
me: Ugh why didn't you punch me???
jeff: No. Awful. The worst. Left after half a song to the bar with the band. Super cool dudes. But yeah [school of seven bells] not that sweet.
jeff: I was so smitten with those guys that I ended up buying the vinyl. Like i owed them something.
me: Yes! Wish I'd been there filming.
jeff: You get any good photos?
me: Eh.
jeff: That show was great. Made me like the record even more.
me: Me too. And Tom Petty. And Wilco.
me: That was fun.
jeff: Yeah. Loved it.

found out this morning we both spent the rest of the night scavenging ebay for old grateful dead t-shirts. lost cause. then jeff told me this: "dude was telling us that it's weird that everyone thinks that record sounds so cohesive as he recorded it over something like 6 years in and out of nice studios and home 4 tracks. thought that was kind of sweet. spent years on that thing." paid off, eh? what a hell of a damn band. here's an mp3 you already got:

UPDATE: YOU OWE JOEL YOUR LIFE (and me a medium birthday present).

This just in from Abe @ Secretly Canadian: It's actually pretty funny that you guys fixated on the t-shirt. When the band was in Chicago last week, their van was broken into and a bunch of their clothes were stolen (luckily all their gear had already been loaded into the club). So that is actually the only shirt Adam had with him, and he'd been wearing it for about a week :-). Still I concur, it's a killer shirt.

anything else?

there is a man who stands on the corner of prince and mercer and he sells the real deal vintage dead t-shirts. he attempts to charge a silly amount of money but you can talk him down. he has amazing ones.
