last night, over the course of a semi-formal conversation about devendra banhart as work was winding down, it dawned on me that my sometimes editor eric ducker is a guy who really loves to edit. which is not to say that he loves to omit or rewrite in red pen, or any of that. but it came across to me that he relates to the process in the way that people on the subway relate to sudoku or in the way that i relate to making a meal by myself: as a sort of fun and interesting challenge with finite mathematics and incalculable ingredients. definitely an interesting filter for such a heady, self-indulgent space cadet as me.
now, granted, these are assumptions that i pulled from an instant messenger conversation where i did a good 75% of the talking. the margin of error is enormous but, considering how admirable i found it all to be, i'm comfortable taking the gamble. after our talk, i went home and turned brussels sprouts, apples, arugula, mustard, vinegar, trail mix, salt, pepper and chili powder -- whatever was around -- into dinner. eric went home and turned our rambling, misspelled enthusiasms into 'a rational conversation between two adults.' here it is. please don't mistake my wild speculations for informed opinions. we were only chatting.
